Coronavirus symptoms

The main symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
  • new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

Most people with coronavirus have at least one of these symptoms.

How to self-isolate

To self-isolate, you must not leave your home.

  • Do not go to work, school or visit public places - work from home if you can.
  • Do not go on public transport or use taxis.
  • Do not go out to get food and medicine - order it online or by phone, or ask someone to bring it to your home.
  • Do not have visitors in your home, including friends and family - except for people providing essential care.
  • Do not go out to exercise - exercise at home or in your garden, if you have one.

You can also get advice on how to avoid spreading coronavirus to people you live with on the NHS website.

How to get tested

If you or someone you live with has symptoms, it's important that you all get tested as soon as possible (within 5 days of symptoms starting).

There are 2 ways to get a test:

  • book an appointment at a drive-through or walk-through test site
  • ask for a home test kit – this will be delivered to your home.

If you get a home test kit, you will need to do the test and return the kit in the next 48 hours. You will be told how to do this.

You can book an appointment or order a home test kit on the NHS website.

The NHS have made us aware of some disruption to testing in England. Tests are still available in Kent and more slots are being continuously released. You must only visit a testing station with a confirmed appointment and you cannot get a test through local NHS hospitals, GP surgeries or other healthcare settings.

The government currently aims to provide results within 48 hours of taking a test, but some results may take longer.

You will get your results by text, email or phone and the message will advise you about what to do next.

If you have any questions about your booking, please call the national helpline on 0300 303 2713.
