Writing - Butterflies

A Butterfly is Patient

The first paragraph of writing for your butterfly page is all about the journey from egg to butterfly. You can see the page from the book below. Read it out loud or ask an adult to read to you.

You may wish to do your writing on lined paper and then stick it onto your fact page.

1. Write the title 'A Butterfly is Patient.' Talk with your adult about what patient means.

2. Write a simple guide to how the life cycle begins and develops. Read my example for ideas. You need to refer to the egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly. Think about what you learnt yesterday and try to incorporate this.

3. Use the action lens and the noticing lens to focus your writing and to help you think about what you might include. Can you describe the action at each stage of the life cycle and can you describe what you would see at each stage?

You need to consider the use of: time conjunctions (after a while, next, then, eventually), interesting verbs (munches, emerges, nibbles) and use of adjectives for extra detail (e.g. delicate wings, tiny egg, vibrant caterpillar).

"It begins as an egg beneath an umbrella of leaves, protected from rain, hidden from creatures that might harm it... until the caterpillar inside chews free from its egg case, tiny, wingless, hungry to grow."

Can you spot my use of:

  • Time conjunctions?
  • Interesting adjectives?
  • Adverbs?

Phonics/ Spelling

  • Log into Spelling Shed for 10 minutes and work on the spellings set by your class teacher.
  • Reception Class, your initial blends for today are st and tw. You will find these words on Spelling Shed.


Year 2

  • Spend 10-15 minutes on ReadTheory
  • Spend some time reading a book in your colour band on Collins Connect.

Reception and Year 1

  • Spend time reading a book in your colour band on Collins Connect.
