Y3 Bake like the Stone Age!
This week, Year 3 stepped back in time to the Stone Age by getting busy in the kitchen! Using everything we have learned about life thousands of years ago, we made our very own Stone Age honey flatbread.
Before we began, we thought carefully about the kinds of ingredients Stone Age people would have had access to. We used simple, natural ingredients and talked about how early humans would have gathered food from their surroundings. We also made sure to follow good hygiene rules, washing our hands thoroughly and keeping our cooking area clean, just like real chefs!
Next, we put our maths skills to the test. Using what we have learned in our mass and capacity unit, we carefully weighed and measured our ingredients. We had to be precise to make sure our bread turned out just right!
Then we combined our ingredients, using teamwork and strong stirring skills to create our dough. We worked collaboratively in groups, sharing jobs, helping one another and making sure everyone was involved. When our dough didn’t always do what we expected, we showed fantastic problem-solving skills, adding a little more flour or water and discussing together what might help improve it. We didn’t give up, and our teamwork helped us succeed!
We shaped our dough into flatbreads and cooked them on a hotplate, just like Stone Age people might have done over a fire. It was exciting to watch them change as they cooked, and even more exciting to smell them!
After cooking, we wrote out our own recipes and methods, explaining each step clearly so others could try making Stone Age bread too.
Best of all, we had a taste—and it was delicious! We all agreed that learning through cooking was great fun, and we felt very proud of our Stone Age creations.
What a fantastic (and tasty) way to bring history to life!
